The Gornergratbahn, opened in 1898 after 2 years of construction, is a 5.6-mile or 9.3 km metre-gauge mountain rack railway linking the resort village of Zermatt, situated a mile (1.6 km) above sea level, to the summit of the Gornergrat at an altitude of 10,134 ft (3.09 km) which makes the Gornergratbahn the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfraubahn (also in Switzerland), and the highest open-air railway in Europe. It was the first electric rack railway to be built in Switzerland. Electrification is 725 Volts, 50 Hz, 3-phase AC.
At the end of the line the Matterhorn is visible on a clear day and features in most promotional photos.
