Thailand-Burma 'death railway' of WW2 is the theme of this year's Man Booker Prize winner

Australian Richard Flanagan has won the Man Booker Prize for 2014 with his sixth novel The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a love story set during WW2, and inspired by his father's experiences in a prisoner of war camp. It was described as "a literary masterpiece". This year is the first time that the prize has been open to all English language books, not just by authors who reside in British Commonwealth countries.  Daily Telegraph webpage
