the 'Indian Pacific' near Port Pirie, South Australia, circa 1976

The GM loco, while not yet in the green and gold colours, can been seen carrying the name Australian National Railways which was established by the Whitlam Federal Government in 1975 to replace the hitherto Commonwealth Railways. Australian National was replaced with National Rail in 1994 and then privatised in 1997, although its track infrastructure was transferred to the federal government owned Australian Rail Track Corporation.  See earlier posts on the Indian Pacific.
