EMD critter

The nickname given to the 11 examples of the two-axle, 84,000 lb (38 tonne) model 40 switcher built by EMD in the period 1940-1943. They were powered by twin General Motors Detroit Diesel 6-71 diesel engines, which produced a combined 300 horsepower (224 kW) feeding a DC traction motor on each axle. One was kept as the EMD Plant #2 switcher, another as the General Motors Cleveland Diesel Division switcher; original buyers were the Defense Plant Corporation, 4 units, the US Army, 3 units, and the US Navy, 2 units. Only 3 are recorded as being scrapped.
