One of the 72 produced is seen at Voinjama airstrip in Liberia. Formally designated the BN-2A Mk III Trislander, the 18-seat three-piston engine civilian utility aircraft were produced 1970-1980 by Britten-Norman on the Isle of Wight, England. They were also produced in Romania and delivered via Belgium to Britain for their certification.
A development of Britten-Norman's better-known Islander, it was intended to have a larger carrying capacity with a stretched fuselage, strengthened, fixed tricycle landing gear and the most characteristic feature, a third engine on the fuselage centre line atop the fin. It was capable of taking off from a 450-metre (492 yards) long landing strip and ideal from poorly prepared surfaces.
