the terminus of the Castlecliff Branch, Wanganui

At about 6 km from Wanganui this was the end of a private railway from 1885 to 1956. Here an old C class saddle tank works on the wharf, at which the Rata of Nelson is berthed, in 1954, two years before the line was bought by NZR.  Passenger services ceased in 1932. Perhaps surprisingly, the line is still used for freight today, serving the Open Country dairy factory.  more
