the old Rhine bridge at Ludwigshafen, Germany
This was built over 1865- 1867, a 10 metre (33 ft) high steel truss bridge. The total length was about 270 metres and width 7.5 metres for the railway bridge and 6.5 metres for the adjoining road bridge. On the outside of each was a 1.8 metre-wide walkway. A statue of Minerva was built atop the portal arches.
As early as 1906 it was found that the bridge had become too small. However, it took until 1928 for the planning of an extension to start. The new railway bridge was built next to the existing bridge in the years 1931-1932. The old railway bridge was converted for road use. The new railway bridge was also built as a steel truss, but without arches, in 1936. Both were given high explosive treatment in 1945 and rebuilt in the 1950s.
