The first "inox" or stainless steel cars in France, the series of 20 of these Z 23700 class were put into service by the réseau de l'État upon the electrification of the line Paris - Le Mans
in 1500 Volts DC.
They were reclassified as Z 3700 by the SNCF when this was created at the beginning of 1938. The series was mainly based at the depot of Montrouge. One example, Z 3714, is preserved at the Cité du train in Mulhouse.
