The original metre-gauge system lasted from 1890 to 1965 and at its peak had 56 route km and 12 lines. From 1890 to 1899 it was worked by steam trams, after which the system was electrified.
In 1997 a new 33 km standard gauge line, the Saarbahn, was opened for today's light rail concept. Of this 14.5 km runs on DB railway tracks between Römerkastell and Saargemünd/Sarreguemines in France.
