steam train approaches the Karangahake Tunnel, NZ, circa 1910


The Karangahake Gorge was on the old route between Hamilton and Tauranga, since 1978 replaced by the Kaimai Deviation and this roadbed, tunnel and bridge is now a walkway/cycleway, as well as in one section, a heritage railway.  For more, see our books and this webpage
