Australian standard gauge progress in 1980

A First Day Cover issued to mark the opening of the standard gauge track from Tarcoola in South Australia (named after an early Melbourne Cup winner) and Alice Springs in the centre of the country.  This then replaced the old 3'6" gauge track shown beginning near Port Augusta  on the map.  Obviously there  was a major relocation of the route involved.  It was to be more than two decades before the line to Alice was extended to Darwin.  See earlier posts.
