This city was part of Germany until 1919, when it was known as Posen, part of Poland 1919-1939, part of Germany again 1939-1945 and part of Poland since 1945. The tram system has been electrically operated since 1898 and currently has 20 daytime lines, one night line, and one tourist line served by historical vehicles. The system consists of about 66 km of standard gauge (1435 mm) track. With a few exceptions routes are double track.
