veteran bus rally, England

Vintage transport rallies are a popular weekend event all over the UK from Spring to Autumn, made more popular in recent years by the number of commercials now being restored back to their original condition. In the face of mounting fuel and operating costs, preservation groups have faced more difficulties through new government laws on fuel use, licences and maintenance standards than actually getting the vehicles to events and running them on the day.

This scene was taken in September 1979 on the Manchester to Bolton run. Among the fleet are buses from former fleets of Salford, Lancashire United, Morecambe and Heysham and, nearest to camera, in a Barrow in Furness Leyland PD2/40 fleet number 169 - a 1958 Park Royal bodied bus. 'Turf accountant' is a British synonym for Bookmaker.  (Wallace Trickett photo)
