Mt Ruapehu

The highest mountain in the North Island at just under 2,800 metres (9,177 ft), and as an active volcano, it receives a fair bit of attention internationally.  In the foreground is the so-called Desert Road, part of State Highway One.

One of the book projects shelved in the recession of 2008, and yet to be reactivated, was called Roadwork featuring photos of the most scenic NZ roads.
