In this experimental locomotive built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft, a pair of cylinders was provided just as on a steam locomotive, but instead of steam they used hot air as the working gas. The prime mover was a diesel engine which drove an air compressor whose output was heated by the diesel's exhaust gases in a contraflow heat exchanger. An overall efficiency of 26% was claimed (against steam's 7-8%), and out on the line, the locomotive is said to have ran well and efficiently at up to 80 km/h (50 mph). More on this
