coal gas explosion on a ship

On Saturday 13 March 1965 a large explosion occurred on board the Union Steam Ship Company collier Kokiri while berthed at Aotea Quay in Wellington. The blast, believed to be from ignited coal gas, lifted the hatch covers from number 2 hold sending them as high as the masthead before landing and destroying the bridge . Two seamen were killed and four injured. The vessel was repaired soon after at the Patent Slip wharf.  (K.Magnussen via Wallace Trickett)
