eastern seaboard high speed rail line from Brisbane to Melbourne, Australia, plans
This is a proposal to build a 1,700 km high speed railway linking Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, which would include 144 km of tunneling, details of which are downloadable here.
The catch is that it will be very expensive and could take 40 years to complete.
Former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer says it would provide untold benefits to the economy.
"High speed rail is a bold vision for Australia but it is routine technology," he told AAP on Thursday.
"Let the debate begin."
The project would cost the equivalent of about two Snowy Mountains schemes, he said, but would greatly boost decentralisation and the Australian economy.
It's a pity there are no politicians with this attitude in the present NZ government.
