cars in Cashel Street, Christchurch, 1930s

Looking west towards the Bridge of Remembrance in the distance. Beath's was a well-known department store in its day; across the Colombo Street intersection are the then buildings of Ballantyne's department store which infamously burned in a major fire in November 1947 with the loss of 41 lives, mostly young female employees trapped in the upper floors.
