Komarom is the Hungarian spelling, in Slovak it is known as Komarno, in German, Komorn. Both Hungarian and Slovak names continue as after WW1 the river Danube became the border between Hungary and the newly created Czechoslovakia. As Komarom straddled the Danube it was divided: the bigger part with the historic town centre on the north bank now was part of Czechoslovakia , and only the southern areas remained Hungarian territory. Both are about 100 km from the respective capitals of Bratislava and Budapest.
