the NSB SKD224 diesel locomotives

two of the 11 units (nmj.no)
an HO scale model available from nmj.no

To replace old switchers in the late 1970s NSB ordered 11 replacement tractors of a modern type from Gmeinder in Austria. SKD 224 units received a Cummins engine rated at 450 hp and with a service weight of 32 tonnes. The 224 was thus strong enough to be used for short freight train. The maximum speed in switching was 35 km/h and in line service 70 km/h. The total length is 8.8 metres and the wheelbase is 4 metres. Today SKD 224 units serve NSB, Cargonet and Jernbaneverket (the rail network).
