steam train at Ventimiglia, Italy

Ventimiglia (French: Vintimille) "thousand winds", just to the east of the French/Italian border at Menton, in the area known as Rochers Rouges or red rocks. The lattice structure next to the railway track appears to have just been a supporting pier for a lookout platform rather than an elevator.  The building on the right is called Balzi Rossi, a museum of pre-history.  The railway was later deviated through a short tunnel under this point.

Two better views of the railway viaduct.  In the lower pic, women are washing clothes on the rocks while an armed frontier guard watches.
