more old transport in the Manawatu Gorge

The tunnel visible here was recently daylighted in a fairly major undertaking.

One of NZ's more interesting natural features, the Manawatu River through this gorge is the only natural break in the continuous series of mountain chains that run from the Wellington Region to the Bay of Plenty.  As the railway line was built along the north side of it and the road along the south side, good easy photo opportunities exist for getting interesting shots, although shadows at different times of day aren't helpful, neither are the regular slips and rockfalls that block the road, and sometimes the railway.  For more, see our books.
