Chiavenna town and station, Italy

A 1950s view
a 1990s view

Chiavenna is the end of a 26.2 km branch line from Colico - which in that distance rises from 211 metres altitude to 330 metres - opened on 9 September 1886.  As mentioned in an earlier post, the lines in the Valtellina were notable for their pioneering use of 3-phase AC electric locomotives. On 15 October 1902 the electrification of the Colico-Lecco-Chiavenna and Colico-Sondrio lines was inaugurated with overhead at 3,600 Volts and nominal frequency of 16.7 Hz, powered by a hydroelectric plant at Campovico.
