The Salzburg local railway began in 1886 with the opening of a 13.2 km standard gauge line between Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) and Drachenloch. This was closed in 1953, but two other lines remain: Salzburg–Lamprechtshausen, 25.6 km, and Bürmoos–Trimmelkam, 8.82 km. Both are electrified with 1000 Volts DC from overhead. An underground station for the Lokalbahn was built in Salzburg in the mid-1990s.
