the former cogwheel railway Chemin de fer du Mont-Revard, France


The Chemin de fer du Mont-Revard was a 9.35 km long metre-gauge cog-wheel line, inaugurated in 1892, which connected Aix-les-Bains with the Mont Revard in Savoie.

Stations were:
Aix-les-Bains, altitude 264 metres
Mouxy, altitude 412 metres
Pugny-Chatenod, altitude 667 metres, at 3.3 km
Pré-Japert, altitude 1,064 mètres, at 6.1 km
Le Revard, altitude 1,511 mètres, at 9.1 km

There were two major engineering works:
* The Viaduct of Fontanelles, situated below the station of Pré-Japert. Constructed in stone, it contained 5 arches of 12 metres, and was 100 metres long;
* The tunnel of Pré-Farnier in a curve, 125 mètres long, above Pré-Japert.

There was another 50-metre long tunnel below Pré-Japert.

The Abt type rack rail was installed along the entire length.

Rolling stock comprised:
* 8 steam locomotives:
Numbers 1 to 7 from SLM Winterthur, 1892, 0-4-2T type, weight empty 14.2 tonnes;
N° 8 from SLM Winterthur, 1929, type 0-6-2T, weight empty 18.1 tonnes;
* 10 bogie passenger cars with 60 seating places;
* 3 flat wagons of 2 axles

The operation closed in 1937, replaced with a téléphérique (aerial cableway).
