Art in the age of steam: America, Europe and the railway

A book published to accompany the exhibition of which we have a copy in our library.

You can add that its importance in land transport today can hardly be overstated.

Of no surprise is that steam railways inspired many artists, and the heading is the title of an exhibition that has travelled both sides of the Atlantic in the last 4 years - website

"La Durée poignardée" aka "Time Transfixed" a painting from 1938 by Belgian surrealist René Magritte (1898-1967), thought to have been inspired by the accident at the Gare Montparnasse in Paris in 1895 (see earlier post).
