to the Col de la Schlucht and the Devil's Rock!

If the mix of French and German seems odd, this road is in the region of Alsace, which has changed hands between France and Germany a few times over the centuries (see earlier post) and generally the French retained the German placenames, sometimes with minor respelling.  Schlucht in German means 'ravine, canyon, gorge'.  The electric tramway to this place began from Munster and reached the highest point at an altitude of 1160 metres.  The tramway ended with the beginning of WW1 in 1914 and became a road, today the Route de la Schlucht.  The tunnel in the above views is still a feature on the road.
