the old Kehl bridge over the Rhine at Strasbourg in old postards

In the modern era the River Rhine (Rhin/Rhein) in this area has marked the border between France and Germany up to 1871, between 1919-1940 and since 1945.  This 238 metre long bridge, with an impressive amount of filigree ironwork along the sides, was opened in 1862 and as can be seen the accompanying road bridge from 1897 carried international tram tracks.  Needless to say, they suffered in the warring in the 1871-1944 period. A new single track railway bridge was opened in 1956 which was replaced in October 2010 with a double track bridge suitable for speeds of 160 km/h.
