As can be seen on the poster for the inauguration, the Milan Metro dates from November 1964. It runs mainly underground, serving both Milan and surrounds and the network consists of 3 standard gauge lines, identified by different colours and numbers:
Line M1 (Red) - 26.9 km (16.7 miles) - 38 stations
Line M2 (Green) - 39.4 km (24.5 miles) - 35 stations
Line M3 (Yellow) - 16.7 km (10.4 miles) - 21 stations
All up the system has a total length of 83.5 km serving 94 stations, the largest metro network in Italy. Expansion is in progress; two new lines, 4 and 5 are under construction and more new extensions are planned.
