Swiss 'Chiquita' suburban trains, 1976

A further development of the the RABDe 12/12 multiple units, the RABDe 8/16 sets or "Chiquitas' as they were unofficially known (because of the tendency of their floors to flex), were a series of 4 x 4-car electric multiple unit sets.  The 8/16 means half the axles were powered, in contrast to all the axles powered with the predecessor, but with the use of lightweight aluminium, the same rate of acceleration was possible.  But because of problems, particularly with the door controllers, they weren't used much and were withdrawn in 1997.
