Windsor, Ontario, then and now

Two postcard scenes taken at the corner of Park Street and Ouelette Avenue, Windsor, Ontario, although not at the same time.  Judging from the vehicles the first seems the late 1950s and the second about 1964.

As usual, telephoto lens compression has distorted the relative closeness of buildings: that tall central skyscraper is actually across the Detroit River in Detroit, Michigan (USA).  Just as Detroit has been the US's motor city, Windsor has had a similar role in Canada as one might expect, although its population is a lot less than that of Detroit.  Windsor is known as Canada's smog city, although it looks clean enough in the current Streetview.

As is always the case, studying the details in the pics can reveal interesting things: in the postcards, apart from vehicles of interest to transport enthusiasts, a fluttering Union Jack and the pre-maple leaf Canadian flag, and in the current Streetview it seems a motorcycle cop is giving an errant motorist a ticket.
