Iron Mountain mine, Duluth, Minnesota

A postcard from 1905. Most of the iron ore (and later taconite) mined in these mountains was transported by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway (DM&IR) and its predecessors operating in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin to the Great Lakes ports of Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota. Control of this railway was acquired on 10 May 2004 by the Canadian National Railway (CN) when it purchased the assets of Great Lakes Transportation.

A recommended book on this most interesting subject is Minnesota-Ontario Iron Ore Railroads, still in print.
