One of the more impressive railway features of North America is this set of curves below the peak known as Round Knob (1,313 metres or 4,307 feet altitude) near Dendron in North Carolina.
The drawing at top dates from the 1880s before the Western North Carolina Railroad became part of the Richmond and Danville Railroad, which in 1894 in turn became part of the Southern Railway and in 1990 part of Norfolk Southern.
