The Rhein or Rhine river is of course one of Europe's main arterial waterways. This postcard from about a century ago shows the paddle steamer Ernst Ludwig next to the mid-river castle known as Die Pfalz at Kaub, nowadays painted white and an UNESCO World Heritage site.
