old-time steam railway charm in Southland

This photo from 1967 showing an AB-hauled goods train crossing the Oreti River combined road-rail bridge, the start of the Mossburn Branch at the junction of the line to Lumsden and Kingston, was one of the John Brouwer photos included in the book The Kingston Flyer Line: a history by Tony Hurst.

Although David Lowe of the NZ Railway Observer at the time of the book's publication casually dimissed them as "standard railfan fare" we think they are quite charming and particularly evocative of what is now a by-gone era.  For more of these photos, get the book.

Update
This book has now sold out.  A new edition is being contemplated.
