Pennsylvania Railroad diesel art, late 1940s

While most American railroads designed stylish locomotive liveries with the beginning of the diesel age, the Tuscan red with mustard yellow stripes of the PRR was one of the nicest.  The top artwork shows a pair of E8s (built from 1949 to 1953) on a passenger train with Pittsburgh in the background. As noted before, the PRR decided to put diesels on all its expresses in 1948. The solid yellow stripes as on the preserved example in the second photo were presumably quicker to apply than the group of 5 fine stripes.
