the Old Patagonian Express

La Trochita or Old Patagonian Express - most people know the latter name from the book written by Paul Theroux (the poor man's version of Colin Taylor) in 1978.  

It is an actual steam train that runs on narrow gauge 750 mm track through the spectacular and remote pristine waterways of Patagonia, one of the most charming Argentinian provinces. The railway is 402 km long and runs along the foothills of the Andes. Trains first began to run on the completed parts of the line in 1935. The Argentinian government decided to close the line in 1992, but following an international outcry it was saved. Article
