Paul Delvaux

A recent book from Belgium that we have added to our library is this one, peintre des gares, on the life and work of Belgian artist Paul Delvaux (1897-1994). As the painting on the book's cover, "Le dernier wagon" (1975) suggests, his penchant was for surrealism (although he did not consider himself "a Surrealist in the scholastic sense of the word") involving trains and female nudes. His railway themes were often based on scenes in Belgium and Luxembourg. In 1982 the Paul Delvaux Museum opened in Saint-Idesbald.
