Jervois Quay, Wellington, a century ago
A Sydney Charles Smith photo that was considered for but not used in the books Wellington: a capital century and Wellington Transport Memories, this shows the electric tram tracks down the centre of the road with a single-decker electric tram trundling away from the camera further down, otherwise all traffic is horse and carts. The tram stop is to the left and there seems to be patches of lubricating oil where the tracks are. There is a third track; those who have these two books will know what it is and more about this location.
The building on the left, at the time the Harbour Board Offices, is now the Wharf Apartments building, and its ground floor is now longer occupied by Watson's Whisky and tattoo and billiard parlours but the more salubrious Academy of Arts.
