Since 1917 the settlement of Cook on the Australian Trans-Continental railway in the middle of the Nullarbor ('no tree') Plain has been a refueling and rewatering stop for trains (both are brought there by special supply trains) and it has a crossing loop that can handle trains of 1.8 km in length.
Today the settlement only has a resident population of 4 and signage proclaims it is a ghost city. In summer you bake during the day and freeze at night. In the cooler months ( April - September) the daytime temperature is normally agreable. Some pics by one of our directors.
