The Needles lighthouse, Isle of Wight

The Needles cliffs are one of the best known features of the coast of the Isle of Wight, off the south English coast.  The early photos show the 33-metre high lighthouse built in 1859 without the helicopter landing pad added in 1987 on the top, and suggest that its colour scheme wasn't then the white with red bands that it is now.
This year due to the condition of the chalk strata on which the lighthouse was built, a £500,000 underpinning project was announced, designed to stop the lighthouse falling into the sea. Over a 12 week period from early June, civil marine contractors were to have dug a trench around the base of the lighthouse, install a ring of stabilising posts, and infill it with concrete.
