One thing that all the British cars imported into New Zealand for the 25 years or so after WW2 did is create a lot of jobs for motor mechanics; and the appeal of do-it-yourself repairs to save money was certainly there for a lot of blokes. This issue of
Car Mechanics from 1959 features a mid-1950s Vanguard on the front cover and it suggests that an even-older Buick could be bought for under £200. One problem is that British roads weren't designed for big cars, something you realise quickly when you drive there.
