the Union Steam Ship Company's 'Aorangi'



Built by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company in Glasgow, Scotland, RMS Aorangi II was launched on 17 June 1924. The ship was 17,491 grt, and a quadruple screw vessel powered by four six-cylinder Fairfield built Sulzer ST70 two stroke single acting engines of 700 mm bore producing a total of 13,000 hp at 127 rpm.   1. Brings back memories of a grand old lady. I sailed from Auckland to Vancouver on the Aorangi in 1949. It was the third or fourth trip as a civilian ship after conversion back from a troop ship after WW2. Returned to NZ also with the Aorangi in 1950. Ship did not last much longer as it was withdrawn from service in 1952.
