preserved narrow gauge Climax geared locomotive, Puffing Billy railway, Melbourne

The locomotive dates from 1928 and the railway is 2'6″ (762 mm) gauge. The Puffing Billy website states:

"Built in 1928 for the Forests Commission of Victoria and painted all-over black with the name CLIMAX painted on the sides of the cab in white block letters, this locomotive was issued to the Tyers Valley tramway which branched off the Moe to Walhalla line at Collins Siding. This locomotive was withdrawn from service in 1949 following the closure of the tramway and in 1950 it travelled from Tyers Junction to Collins Siding to Erica where it remained stored until 1965. Loaned to the Puffing Billy Preservation Society for its Steam Museum, it was taken to Menzies Creek in 1965 where it remained until 1982 when the Emerald Tourist Railway Board bought it and transferred it to Belgrave for restoration. It was returned to service for special use on the Belgrave to Gembrook line in 1988 painted in its original all-over black livery, except that the word “Climax” on the sides of the cab was now painted in the style of the Climax Manufacturing Co., a style that this locomotive had never carried."

Mountain gondola SkyRide, Stowe , Vermont

The gondola began operating in late 1968 and takes skiers to the top of Mt Mansfield, the highest mountain in Vermont. The gondola route is stated to be 2.6 miles (4.2 km) long with a vertical altitude difference of 803.6 ft (245 metres). Mt Mansfield is 4,395 feet (1,349 metres) above sea level.

This event marked the centenary of Argentina that year.  The railway system in Argentina began in 1855, although only 10 km (6 miles) had been built by 1860. By the time of this expo it has reached 29,000 km (18,000 miles).

In Cape Town: the Bark 'William Hales' towing out of port in 1886, art

By John Stobert (English, 1929-). "The featured vessel in this painting is the American bark, William Holes. She was rounding the Cape of Good Hope from Singapore en route to New York when she went aground on a reef off Struis Point. The ships’ log reveals the predicament.

“Put in leaky. Struck reef off Struis Point and bumped very heavily. After setting all sail ship came off. Found her making water rapidly. All hands worked pumps. Water gained rapidly so made for Table Bay as vessel could not have kept afloat much longer.”

Mexican narrow gauge 2-8-0

One of the G-030 class of 2-8-0's which was NdeM’s most prolific 3ft narrow gauge class with 28 engines (N°. 262-289) built by Baldwin in 1921 and 1924. This example was withdrawn in 1968.
