The railway line between Ourense and Vigo was opened in 1881, and soon after work on the branch between Redondela and Pontevedra began, 19 km, following the coastline of the river by the South Bank. With the building of the second and most spectacular viaduct, Redondela thus became the "town of the viaducts"; the Ourense viaduct had been built in 1876. Both have been designated of cultural interest since 1978.
The viaduct is composed of three metal sections, two of 45 metres and a central one of 59 metres. The work includes several arches.
The total length is thus 149 metres and support is also provided by two metal pillars, 28 metres high. Including the access sections, the viaduct is close to 250 metres. It was designed by engineer and architect Mariano Carderera Ponzán (1846-1916).
