Dj and Ja in Dunedin

In 1970/71 the Dj diesels replaced the Ja steamers on the South Island Main Trunk Main South Line expresses; now both classes are preservation material.  In this case the Dj in Southerner livery is used for Otago Exursion tourist trains. Ja 1274 was the last steamer built for NZR (by the city's Hillside Workshops in 1956) and was displayed at the Otago Settlers Museum until 2011 when the new shelter visible was built for its display closer to the station building. There are no plans for restoration to working order. For more, see our books. A pic from last year by Geoff Churchman.
