Introduced in 1949, the train was collectively operated by different railroads along its a 2,438-mile (3,924 km) route between Chicago and Emeryville (San Francisco).  Since 1971 it has been an Amtrak service (without the vista domes) and is arguably the most scenic in the US, particularly west of Denver.  See earlier posts.
