the centre of Barrow in Furness in October 1979

A variety of council buses are seen in Duke Street, identified as in most towns of that era by their own livery which was always a joy to experience when visiting towns and cities throughout UK. By the mid 1980s many had gone, replaced by private operators after deregulation swept through, a clinical operation by the then Thatcher Government. Nearest the camera is a Leyland National, behind it a double Decker Leyland Titan with several Leyland Leopards and another National visible. In the 1990s this area became a pedestrian precinct and like many towns in UK, the central business district has since suffered as more shops and businesses moved to the outskirts where car parking is easier and business rents more affordable.
